Genesis
The Department of History was established in 2016. Since its inception, it has been imparting knowledge to student community about the various dimensions of the discipline of History. It provides students with an understanding of historical developments that shape today’s world. It undertakes cutting-edge research in diverse domains of History. It has introduced the latest theories and methods that will heighten students’ learning experience. Since 2021, the Department has been conducting Archaeological Excavations which bring to light the ethos of ancient Tamils. It regularly organizes exhibitions on various aspects of History and Archaeology including Historical Monuments in India for the benefit of learners on the campus as well as students of various affiliated colleges and the general public, through which they could be made to learn the history of our past and its intrinsic values. The department currently offers the following programmes of study - M.A. and Ph.D.
Vision
- To make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian history.
- To offer a critical review of the past that will enable the students to understand the present and look forward to the future.
- To establish a constructive society through the impact of history on learners.
- To transform the students into responsible citizens who are critically informed about the past and its consequences for the present.
- To impart deep and profound historical knowledge to students.
- To empower students to cope with the challenges of globalisation by instilling in them a lifelong passion for learning about the past.

The Department of History has successfully produced 5 Doctoral Degree holders who have conducted extensive research in various areas of History. Currently, 10 scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. research. The Department has completed 8 major research projects, which have resulted in groundbreaking findings and publications, widely recognized and cited. Furthermore, the Department has 1 ongoing research project.

The Department of History has well-established alumni network that extends beyond India. Many of its alumni have become leading professionals in their field in Tamil Nadu, with a few working in other countries. A significant number of the Department's alumni are employed in various Sectors. Notably, many of them hold key positions in prestigious institutions such as Railways, Colleges, and Universities.

The Student Council is functioning effectively in the Department. It is helping in the organization of conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and other events. The council members extend their support and service when programmes are arranged for the visit of students to historical places and archaeological sites.

The Department has a good track record of placing students in various organizations over the years. The university has a dedicated Placement Cell that provides job-oriented training to students and coordinates their career development.
Throughout the M.A. programme, the students are duly mentored and trained. Furthermore, a significant number of students have also secured positions as faculty members in educational and research institutions across the country.
