UGC has extended the Services of SC/ST cell to OBC, minority, disabled students and socio economically disadvantaged groups. The Equal Opportunity Cell was established in Alagappa University. An objective to address the issue related to the students belonging to Scheduled Cast and Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Class and Minorities and the Persons with disabilities (PWDs) on a Continual basis and empowers the persons with disabilities and the students to participate fully in the academic, Intellectual, Social and Cultural life of University on equal basis.

The Indian society is divided into various sects and classes. This is because of the caste system which is prevalent in the country. The roots of the caste system go back to the ancient Vedas dividing people on the basis of varna or occupation. It has brought many evils in the society. The caste system in India has deep historical roots, originating from ancient Hindu society.
The caste system continues to affect social interactions and opportunities. Many people face discrimination based on their caste, particularly those from Scheduled Castes (SCs/ST and minorities). Here are some key impacts like Discrimination in education and employment, limited access to resources and opportunities, social tensions and conflicts.
One-Day Awareness Programme on the theme “Contemporary Social Issues and Problems – SC/ST and Minorities in India”
The One-Day Awareness Programme on the theme “Contemporary Social Issues and Problems – SC/ST and Minorities in India” was conducted on 25 March 2025 at 10.15 a.m. at the Placement Conference Hall, Alagappa University. The event featured expert lectures by Dr. S. Rajamohan, Former Registrar (i/c) and Director, AIM, Alagappa University, and Dr. R. Mangaleswaran, Professor, Department of Social Work, Bharathidasan University, Trichy, who shared valuable insights on the challenges, opportunities, and contemporary concerns faced by marginalized communities in India.
The programme was organized under the leadership of Dr. A. Muthusamy, Professor & Head, Department of International Business, who served both as the Convener and Organizing Secretary, along with Dr. P. Boomi, Assistant Professor, Department of Bioinformatics, as Co-Organizing Secretary. A total of 140 participants, including students from the Department of International Business, management students, and research scholars, actively took part in the event and benefitted from the expert interactions.

The Seminar / Conference / Workshop will cover the following themes based on the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi: Public welfare, values, personal development, peace and non-violence, truth, rural development, aesthetic experience, ethical experience, religious experience, creativity and imagination in the teaching–learning process for the betterment of life and self-attainment, and the ideological perception of Gandhiji in the Indian struggle for freedom.
