The services of workshop-cum-instrumentation center are most essential to back the good quality teaching and research. In the absence of it, the quality of research may suffer in terms of delayed on outputs. In Alagappa University, we have a centralized workshop-cum-instrumentation center to cater for the needs of the Department of the faculty of Science viz., Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Crystal Growth, Biotechnology and Oceanography and Coastal area studies. Besides, these facilities are thrown open to help the science Departments of the 23 affiliated colleges. |

NSS
|
Alagappa University has been continuously in NSS since its inception with the major objective of providing ample opportunities to the youths to involve themselves in social activities and ultimately developing their personality. 4200 NSS volunteers from 21 affiliated colleges and university departments are actively participating in all NSS activities of Alagappa University. NSS takes streneous efforts to inculcate in the minds of the students the voluntary participation in community service while they are studying in educational institutions.
Every year elocution and essay competitions are organized on personality development, leadership development and national integration to motivate students and to build leadership and communication abilities.
A ten day special camp is organized every year. Developing infrastructure in the adopted village, leadership programme, tree planting, medical camp, progarmme on preserving water resources, voters awareness, free legal – aid awareness, women and children welfare are the important activities undertaken by students in the special camping programme. Students’ cultural progrmame forms part of special camping activities. |

Health Care Center
|
|
The University has a Health Care Centre for early diagnosis of diseases and reference to speciality treatment, if needed. Compulsory general medical check up camps are organized for all the members of the University viz. the students, faculty and staff. Maintenance of health records is in practice which helps the users in times of emergency.
A team of student volunteers along with the Medical Officer went to the Tsunami affected areas and carried out relief work. A medical camp was organized at the affected site.
Various educational institutions in and around Karaikudi viz. Alagappa Engineering College, Alagappa Arts College, Alagappa Polytechnic and Sree Sevugan Annamalai College, Devakottai utilize the services available at the Physiotherapy Clinic free of cost. |

Hostel Facility
|
There are three hostels – two for men and one for women students of the University. The hostel rooms are well furnished and well ventilated. There is provision to accommodate around 500 students. The hostels have separate hygienic mess halls, a reading room supplemented with leading English and Tamil dailies, magazines and Employment News. There is enough space for undertaking Sports and Games activities. The mess is run by the student representatives and the expenses are divided equally. Nominal establishment charges are collected from the students to run the hostel. Experienced faculty members are posted as Warden and Deputy Warden to look after the welfare of the students. Transport facility is made available to them to commute to the Departments. All the hostels are connected with telephone facilities. The recreation rooms are provided with TV and other facilities. Clean water is made available to the students with Aqua Guard filtering.
Furnished hostel accommodation is made available to the students from other countries on priority basis. This gives them an opportunity to easily mingle with other students and adapt themselves to the local culture at the earliest. |

Students have immense talents and skills. In order to bring out their innate talents, University formed a Choir and an Orchestra on 5.4.1988. From the year 1988 on wards, many cultural competitions, namely Dance, Group song, literary Events, Mono acting, Rangoli, Mimicri, Clay Modelling, Cartooning, Skit, Mime, one act play are held to bring out the talents and potentialities of students. |

The Department of Biotechnology, Alagappa University offers consultancy services in the following areas.

 Setting up of biotechnological laboratories (especially Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Biochemistry, Plant Tissue Culture, Fermentation etc) for the benefit of Academic Institutions.
Development of teaching kits for P.G. Lab Courses such as Recombinant DNA Technology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology/Genetics, Immunotechnology etc in collaboration with biotech industries.
DNA fingerprinting, 16SrDNA typing/sequencing and Genomics.
Micropropagation of Economically important crops/Medicinal Plants.
Vermiculture, Mushroom Culture and Aquaculture.
Pesticide Pollution Monitoring through Biomarkers.

General Facilities

Canteen: A Canteen is functioning at the University campus for the benefit of the students, faculty and staff. It is run on contract basis. As it is located very close to the Distance Education Directorate, the students of DDE also make use of this facility.
Telecom Centre: An approved Telecom Centre is functioning at the University Campus. ISD / STD / Local calls can be made through this centre by all concerned.
Reprographic Facility: For the benefit of the student community, a number of reprographic facilities are available in and around the campus.
Post Office: A full fledged Post Office – cum – Sorting Office is available just in front of the University. The Speed Post facility is also available at the post office.
Banking Facility: The salaries of the faculty and staff are distributed through the banks viz. Indian Bank and ICICI Bank. The students are supported while opening the bank accounts. They are available in the vicinity of the University Campus.
Co-Operative Stores: The stores is in operation to help the faculty and staff of the University. Soft loans are provided to the needy at the earliest possible time.
School: A Model School is available within the campus of the Alagappa University, which is used by the students of B.Ed. programme of the Alagappa University College of Education.
Quarters: The quarters facility is made available to the faculty and staff of the University in adequate number.
Employment Cell: University has an Employment Cell and a Placement Officer. Apart from this, each department has Placement Coordinators to carry out the placement activities in an effective manner. Career Counseling is also done by the faculty members and class advisors after understanding the needs of the students. Preparation of placement brochures, identification of possible recruiters, coordination of placement activities are few of the activities of the University Placement Cell. Both off-campus and on-campus interviews are coordinated through this cell.
Parent–Teachers Association: Regular and frequent PTA meetings are conducted for involving the Parents of the students. Feedback from the parents is obtained so as to fine tune the educational system at the University.
Alagappa Alumni Association: The University has a registered Alumni association by the name 'Alagappa Alumni Association' (AAA). It has its charter of duties and office bearers to carry out these activities. Every department has its own Alumni association. Annual meetings are conducted to share their experiences, exchange of ideas amongst their peers and share their views with their juniors. They also help giving feed back on curricula modification. Another important outcome of the Alumni meeting is the placement assistance. Alagappa Alumni Association (AAA) has its own website through which the latest information is disseminated to the Alumni. It also provides registration details to the Alumni. |

Department of Physics and Crystal Research Centre are equipped with the sophisticated instruments for the preparation of thin films and single crystal growth. Also some of the characterization techniques like photoconductivity, impedance spectroscopy, surface analysis, etc are available for the inhouse scholars and for other institutions’ scholars from various universities and education institutions. for their photoconductivity measurements of semiconductor materials useful for solar cells, resistivity measurements using multifunction meter (M/s Oriel, U.S.A), semiconductor thin film preparation with vacuum coating unit, spray pyrolysis set-up, pulse console and potentiostat/galvanostat, impedance measurements using Keithly LCZ meter. In addition to these thin film characterization and single crystal growth instruments were utilized with the consultancy of expertise available in the Crystal Research Centre to grow single crystals of NLO materials useful for optical communication devices. The grown crystals are characterized with metallurgical microscope with the magnification of 1000X.

Department of International Business and Commerce Scope for Consultancy Services

The Department of International Business and Commerce offers Post Graduate Programme in Commerce and International Business Administration. Its curriculum is need based to the students as well as to the business people and society. The students can approach to the department to identify the right course for the future studies as well as employment.
The department offers entrepreneurship related subjects to the students. It is revised periodically based on the changes and requirements in the business in India as well as abroad. So the budding entrepreneurs as well as existing business people can approach the department for identifying right projects in the present competitive market. The faculties have the enough as well as practical experience in project identification, formulation, evaluation and execution. The special programme offered by the Department of International Business and Commerce, "Master of International Business Administration" provides excellent scope for consultancy services to the exporters and importers for identifying export market, getting export finance, hedging currency risk, export cargo insurance, export price quotations, fulfilling export documentation procedures, and customs formalities for clearing and forwarding of cargo.
The department serves as a research centre for commerce and Management Discipline. The research scholars can approach the department for identifying appropriate research problem and collecting relevant literature to their research problem. The L.CT.L. Palaniappa Chettiar Memorial Auditorium was constructed facing the college main road in the Alagappa University campus and donated to the University by the family of Hon’ble Union Finance Minister Thiru P. Chidambaram on 5.4.2008. This State of the Art Auditorium has various centralized air-conditioning facilities in built, address system, lighting arrangements, acoustic systems and comfortable cushion seating arrangement with amble of car parking facilities. The seating capacity of the auditorium is 555. There is a beautiful park surrounding this auditorium. Water supply and common toilet facilities are also available in this auditorium.
Banks, Schools, Colleges, Government Departments, Public Sector Undertakings of the Sivanganga District for conducting programmes could utilize this auditorium by paying reasonable rent along with electricity charges consumption charges.

Centre for Adult Continuing Education and Extension

The Centre for Adult Continuing Education and Extension was established in 1988 in tune to the University’s motto Excellence in Action and it keeps before it the vision of excellence in all spheres of education. Ever since the CACE&E has implemented the following activities in collaboration with government departments and non-governmental organizations: 148 Training Programmes, 36 Continuing Education Courses, 17 Major and Minor Research Projects, 25 Population Education Programmes, 16 Jan Sikshan Nilayam Programmes and 22 other special activities.
The Centre has carried out and had the facilities such as: community support services to help community people to develop their life skills with self sufficiency and ensure the quality of life. Career guidance and counseling centre provides career oriented assistance to the community people of Sivagangai and Ramnad District. CACE&E Library, an integrated Library equipped with rich collection of print and electronic resources. Talking Book Library has access to more than 200 volumes of recorded books. Braille Library has 10 large type titles, 10 magazines in recorded and Braille format. E-learning and Media Centre, equipped with latest version of computers and web connection enable to access computer based tutorials, multimedia based tutorials for specific needs. CACE&E, Alagappa University, Karaikudi published more than 30 Research Monographs.
CACE&E having network with UNESCO & University Grants Commission and Government Departments such as National Literacy Mission, Ministry of HRD, Tamil Nadu Literacy Mission, Directorate of Adult and Non-Formal Education, Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu State Resource Centre for Non-Formal Education, Department of Health, Animal Husbandry, Hearty Culture, Agriculture, Social Forestry, Rural Development, Social Welfare, Public Relations and Information and Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, Revenue Department, also having network with other 20 Central and State Universities.
Considering the social need and welfare of the community people of under privileged districts like Sivaganga and Ramnad, Prof. P. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, Alagappa University, has the vision to make life long education as a discipline and he has upgraded the Centre for Adult Continuing Education and Extension as a teaching department in the University.
The centre has planned to start a Socially Relevant two-years PG Programme during the academic year 2010-2011 for regular students. Also, having proposal to start P.G. Diploma, Diploma and Certificate Courses in diverse fields for the fulfillment of life long education which will improve the lifestyle of the common men. The centre has proposed to carry out the extension programmes during current year such as dissemination of technology to the community people, sensitization programme on social and economic issues, improvement of slow learners, enhancing employability of the youth from non-formal sector, guidance and conselling to rural youths. Also, proposed to carry out 2 major research projects on rural-vocational biotechnology and imbibing vocational skills to neo-literates for self sufficiency.
