About the Department

The Department of Library &Information Science (DLIS) was started in the 2006-2007 academic year. The department was having two permanent faculty members, and faculty support from the Central library of the University. Presently the department utilizes the services of five faculty members and four professionals in Library & Information Science. Four faculty members are having Ph.D Degree in Library &Information Science.  Our University is the fifth university in the State to have this course.

Even before the creation of the Department of Library & Information Science, Alagappa University has been offering B.L.I.Sc, and M.L.I.Sc programs (from 1998), M.Phil program (from 2002), and C.L.I.Sc and PGDLAN programs (from 2008) in the distance mode (DDE). 

The Department is offering 4 programs inLibrary & Information Science: B.L.I.Sc., M.L.I.Sc., M.Phil., and PhD.

The faculty members have adequate experience in handling courses in Library & Information Science on both the traditional and modern perspectives. The faculty members / Library Professionals from the Central Library provide a sound practical approach to the students. The faculty members have published articles in the peer reviewed journals, presented papers in the national and international seminars, workshops, conferences, and other such platforms. Also, they have authored Course Materials for Distance Learning Programs.

The Department is adequately equipped with good ICT infrastructure for students not only for class room teaching but also for hands on practices. It is providing internet connectivity including computing and printing facility.

The Alumni of the Department consists of well-known professionals who are occupying very prominent positions not only in Tamil Nadu but also in several other states of the country. The faculty consists of teachers who are well known in the profession in this country. Department provides facilities for Library, Internet, Hostel facilities for outside students, Fellowships and scholarships for meritorious students.

Awards and Scholarships:

The University provides PMT and VOC endowment merit scholarship for B.L.I.Sc, M.L.I.Sc and M.Phil students.  The UGC provides RGNFS and Abul Kalam Asad Minority Fellowship Scheme for M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars.
